Project Overview

The Town of Huntersville has begun the process to bring substantial improvements to one of our busiest intersections, Gilead Road and Statesville Road (US 21). The type of intersection that will be constructed is called a median u-turn intersection. There will be no left turns allowed at the intersection. Instead, motorists will turn right and proceed through a median u-turn to then travel in the desired direction. This type of intersection will improve efficiency, especially in conjunction with the Diverging Diamond Interchange currently being designed at Gilead Road and I-77.

The project will include accommodations for pedestrians with improvements including sidewalks, pedestrian countdown signals, and refuge islands in medians. Bicycle accommodations will include wide outside lanes on Statesville Road and bike lanes on Gilead Road. The project will also feature planted medians where feasible.

Because the project will receive federal funding, an environmental impact document called a Categorical Exclusion(CE) was prepared. The document has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The project is in the right-of-way phase where the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is acquiring the necessary land to build the project.

The improvements at the intersection of Gilead Road and Statesville Road (US 21) will provide lasting benefits for our community for years to come. This project will help fulfill our commitment to create an intersection that safely and efficiently moves all modes of travel while providing a true gateway for our historic downtown and area businesses.
