Frequently Asked Questions

Here are project related questions others are asking:

Where is the Median U-turn concept in use today?

There are several locations. In fact, the North Carolina Department of Transportation started adopting these concepts about 10 years ago. Here are some links for Google Maps:

  • Locust
  • Chapel Hill
  • Wilmington

  • How much will it cost?

Preliminary, high-level planning estimates indicate the project will cost in the range of $11.2M. This includes construction, utility relocations, and right of way acquisition. The estimate will be refined as design progresses.

Will this project affect my taxes?

Funding for this project is appropriated through a mixture of existing municipal bond money, North Carolina State and Federal grants. It is unclear at this time whether or not the use of bonds will increase taxes.

From the FAQ in the 2012 Bond Package:
The town included funds for debt service in its Fiscal Year 2012-13 budget to begin preparing to fund new projects. Final total cost will be determined by numerous factors including the total cost of projects approved by the Board, continued rate of growth in Huntersville, operating costs as projects come online and revaluation effects. It is anticipated the worst-case impact over seven years would be a total of a 5-cent tax increase to fund the bond projects and their operating impact. Actual implementation costs may be less. Huntersville currently has one of the lowest tax rates for a city or town its size in the state.
